The Origin and Development

A few hundreds of years ago, our ancestors risked their own lives to come to Taiwan by crossing the infamous Dark Ditch (Taiwan Strait nowadays). Along with their families, their beliefs were brought along for the purpose of mental reliance.

Among the beliefs, Matsu was the most common. In order to learn to communicate with Matsu and receive her guidance, the believers created Matsu’s sacred poems.

The true origin, including the author and location, is long lost in history. It is only logical to conclude that, in the ancient times, people passionately promulgating folklores and local cultures communicated to the gods through casting the moon blocks and resorted to drama and stories to spread the messages and beliefs. Because of the lack of proper general education back then, these methods were the most understandable. Afterwards, certain group of educated people organized these stories into seven-line stanzas (poems with four lines and seven letter in each line).

The stories in these poems describe distinct situations that may apply to practical situations in people’s lives. And through these words, the gods’ wills and guidance can be spread and provide the believers the proper values and methods to deal with difficulties. Moreover, these stories were also made into pictures. Many of these pictures tell the educational value of Matsu belief. In modern days, as human civilization constantly develops at an exponential rate, our minds and spirits require stronger proper values to guide us. This is the exact reason that the old version of the poems, a few hundred years old, must be updated in certain ways that can be applicable and relevant to our lives.

In addition, Mr. Jen informed me of the an incident in which someone dreamed of the King of the East Port reporting to Matsu that the poems and their interpretations spread in the world are outdated and chaotic, hoping Matsu to unify and update the system that would actually be relevant to modern world.

At the same night, Mr. Jen had dream. In the dream, the Black and White Emissaries handed a blank sacred book to him. In the following morning, Beigang Matsu and San Guan approved the validity of this mission, starting to gradually guide Mr. Jen to revise the outdated poems into an applicable, modern version word by word, sentence by sentence. This new version of the poems is fairly complete. However, in the next five years, no one was able to create a version of the corresponding interpretations because those words were seemingly without a system of logic.

In August of 2016, Beigang Matsu announced that the mission was to be continued in the hands of YDM in order to spread the Matsu culture and values across the globe.

After second verification with YDM (Yu De Matsu; Yu means education, and De means morality) and Beigang Matsu, Consultant Shih, with the assistance of many YDM students and faculty members, completed the job before the designated date, lunar March 19th of 2018. On that day, the exegesis was submitted to Beigang Matsu and uploaded onto the official site of YDM. And it was officially published on the website, along with the English version, on the 19th anniversary of YDM!

Nowadays, the most common fortune telling poems are the Sixty Sacred Poems because the most common beliefs among Taiwanese people are Matsu and the King of the Underworld. Furthermore, because Beigang Chaotian Temple has always been the headquarter of Matsu belief, most of the sacred poems are highly similar to the version of the Sixty Sacred Poems of Beigang Chaotian Temple.

The entire exegesis of the modern sixty sacred poems was composed by Consultant Shih, using his thirty-five year experiences in traditional Chinese fortune telling to tell the will of Matsu. This provides a well-rounded and universal system for interpreting these poems.

These poems can also be further used as the textbook of the way of Matsu. The main ideologies in the exegesis consist of the true culture of Matsu. And we sincerely hope that, as the exegesis publishes, more people with the same spirits and ideologies can join us and discuss the ways to further improve our knowledge in the Matsu belief. We also aim to build a world of true peace!
